BUCKEYE, AZ (May 30, 2022) – Sine Kerr of Buckeye, Arizona has been appointed to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion & Research Board (CBB). The CBB is responsible for guiding the national Beef Checkoff Program.

Kerr and her husband, Bill, have owned and operated Kerr Family Dairy, LLC, their fourth-generation dairy farm, in Buckeye since 1980. Their son, Wes and his wife, Lauren, are now partners in the dairy farm as well.

"I look forward to learning how I can be a better advocate for the beef industry,” Kerr said. “It’s important that we all offer our unique perspectives and vision to build upon the work that’s been done by prior industry leaders. It’s vital for organizations to continue bringing in new leadership with new ideas and solutions, and I want to do my part in this new role.”

Kerr has served in the Arizona State Senate since January 2018. Her district covers portions of Western Maricopa County and Yuma County, which includes larger rural and agricultural areas. In the Senate, she serves as chair of the Natural Resources, Energy and Water and Senate Ethic Committees. Kerr is also a member of the Transportation and Technology and Appropriations Committees, as well as the Joint Legislative Budget Committee and the Joint Committee on Capitol Review.

Kerr’s previous state and local involvement includes serving as the state chair of the Arizona Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee, chair of the Arizona Department of Agriculture’s Food and Policy Advisory Committee, Maricopa County Department of Air Quality Hearing Board and board member of the Buckeye Valley Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re very pleased to have Sine as a member of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board,” said Norman Voyles, Jr., 2022 CBB chair. “Sine is a longtime state and community leader in Arizona, and she also brings the important dairy farm perspective to the CBB. We’re looking forward to working with her as an influential and knowledgeable beef industry advocate.”

The CBB consists of 101 members, including domestic beef, dairy and veal producers, as well as importers of beef and beef products. Producer representation on the Board is based on cattle inventory in each state while importer representation is based on a conversion of the volume of imports into live animal equivalencies. Each Beef Board member is appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture from nominations submitted by certified nominating organizations that represent beef and dairy producers in each state or region. Importer appointments are chosen from nominations by importer associations.

ABOUT THE BEEF CHECKOFF:

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States may retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
