QR Codes Scanned In-Store Provide Instant Beef Information

Shoppers in Arizona have a unique shopping option that is a cross between a neighborhood grocer and a big box club store. One of seven locations nationwide, the US Foods’ Chef’s Store in Tempe provides a distinctive shopping opportunity for families and chefs alike, stocking up for their restaurant or food truck, labeling themselves a “one-stop chef shop.”

Chef’s Store locations are open to the public and do not require a membership, so consumers as well as restaurateurs can purchase fresh produce, meat, dairy and more along with restaurant equipment and supplies. The options of beef are plentiful, and are wrapped as subprimals, whole muscle cuts, or pre-cut options like steaks.

To amplify beef information to customers, the Arizona Beef Council and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, as a contractor to the Beef Checkoff Program, developed point of sale and education materials for use in all Chef’s Store locations. Helping shoppers learn about the 21 beef cuts that are available in-store, new signage includes a beef image, carcass location diagram, cooking method suggestions and applications along with a custom QR code that will take shoppers to the cut page on the www.BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com, right on their phone as they are standing in the meat cooler.

US Foods rolled out the new signage at the Arizona location before extending to the remaining stores. To date, the Arizona QR codes scanned have led to 165 unique visitors to the corresponding beef cut webpage where the shoppers have spent an average of 1:01 minute looking at beef information. The campaign has driven 486 total visits to the website, meaning shoppers who clicked the QR code in-store were repeat visitors to the site within a couple weeks following their first QR code scan. The most-visited pages are Top Sirloin Butt, Blade/Lifter Meat and Beef Rib. Scans have increased monthly.

Other Beef Checkoff-created point of sale materials in the Tempe store include beef cuts charts in both English and Spanish.

US Foods is a national food distribution company who delivers food and supplies to independent and multi-unit restaurants, healthcare and hospitality entities, government and educational institutions.

About the Beef Checkoff Program
The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States may retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA Approval.

About the Arizona Beef Council
The Arizona Beef Council is a non-profit organization served by a nine-member board of directors representing cattle growers, cattle feeders, and dairy farmers, and are appointed by the Governor of Arizona. These volunteers oversee Arizona’s beef checkoff and checkoff-funded programs.
